Model making kit

I have been out on the ground and very quickly produced a model for a set of orders. Nothing fancy of flash, but remember you can make them more detailed depending on the time and resources available. I am sure you can get the idea from what I have done for you.

A simple model kit consisting of the following items.

Image
Red cards for the enemy
Green cards for RV's
Pink cards for the known areas
Orange cards for spares

Blue ribbon for streams rivers.
Red for tracks and roads.
Garden markers and blue tact.
Permi marker pens.
North pointers.

You can add to your model kit to make it more informative.

Model houses.
Orbat and task cards.
Task cards.

You may want to make a grid. This one has been made from blue wool and the squares are equally spaced apart to represent grid squares on a map.

Image

You may want to use a sheet especially if the ground is rock solid.

Image

You can have a large with four pegs for area in general and a small sheet with four pegs for area in detail. You will also need some colored chalk.

You can use colored paint to assist in your model.

Green for trees and woods.
Red for tracks and roads.
Brown for footpaths.
Blue for streams and rivers.

You will need to have a digging tool

Image

If you use the area all the time you may want to paint the area on to a sheet, this cuts down on time.

Image

Depending the size of the kit will depend on the container you will need.

Image

You will need some form of lighting for the building of your model, and for when the orders are given.

Right angle torch for the building of the model and for the orders.
Cyalumes for of the building and for the orders.
Head torch for building of the model and for the orders.

If you need to hide the light from model, you may want to build a light proof shelter. This is made from a basha with side skirt sown onto it. The shelter is put over the model and the section then lay on their bellies. Put their heads into the shelter and listen and write the orders being given.

Image

If you can find an area that will hide the model. A dip in the ground is ideal to limit the amount of light seen.

Image

Now that you have found an area you need to clear it, so that you can build an area in general and an area in detail. Ensure you have the model facing magnetic north.

Image

Next you need to divide the area into two, one for the area in general the other in detail.

Image

Next you need to start building your area in general putting as much detail as possible. If you can show the terrain (the height of the area) then do so this makes it easier for the troops to understand the area.

Image

You then need to start building the area in detail. Best to start from a ERV or FRV location to the objective. Again show as much detail as possible.

Image

Do not forget to put a scale line on both of the models this helps the troops understand the distance they are going to travel.

Image

Last thing arrange where the troops are going to seat. If you have task orbat cards lay them down where you want then to sit, and remember they face the model the direction they are approaching the objective.

Image

Remember this was a very quick model. This took about half an hour to build them both. If you want to put a boarder around the model using sticks you can. If you want to put the northing's and easting's along the sides you can. As long as when the troops sit down for the orders and you can easily explain what everything is then no one will fault you. Remember also when explain the model left to right up and down on the model in general, and then the same process for the model in detail. When you are explaining the models get the troops to answer questions on what things are representing on the model to the ground they are about to cover. Have a pointer to point things out on the model, but do not trash your model when you are pointing them out. Good luck with your model making.
